BILLFISH COUNTS DOWN IN COOLER FISHING WATERS AROUND TIP OF BAJA

May 27, 2005, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Cabo San Lucas sport fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico Report:

The billfish counts were down a bit this week at Cabo San Lucas due to the cooler water currents protruding through the local waters and all the way up to Las Frailes. Cabo San Lucas charter fishing boats are having to run a bit farther, out to the 1150 spot to get to the edge of the warmer water currents and where the fish seem to be holding in pattern.

Gaviota Fleet, reporting in for 40 days, reflected 31 stripers, (28 released) 1 sailfish released, 2 wahoo and 2 yellowfin tuna.

The "Fish Cabo", reporting for 3 fishing days reflected 1 dorado & 21 yellowfin tuna and the "Fish Cabo I" also reporting for 3 fishing days tallied a single striper released, 1 yellowfin tuna and 1 yellowtail.

Cabo San Lucas weather had 67 degree nights to 95 daytime highs, westerly winds blowing, and mostly sunny. Sea conditions had a cold plume of water extending from Cabo Falso to 30 miles to the south of the peninsula, registering in the low 60's, with the warmer water laying offshore from the 95 to the 1150 at 71-72 degrees.

The best Cabo San Lucas fishing area was the 1150 for billfish for the most part of this week. Live bait was almost a necessity this week, with few fish taken on artificials.
