PISCES FLEET WEEKLY REPORT BY TRACY EHRENBERG
June 17-23, 2005, Tracy Ehrenberg, Pisces Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Fishing is really beginning to look up here in the Cabo San Lucas vacation area. With the moon waning and the weather warming, some Cabo sportfishing boats had some really outstanding days.
Michelle and Don Porter visit Cabo at least once a year to fish with their favorite captain Rey on "La Brisa," and they were not disappointed, catching and releasing five striped marlin on June 17th, off of San Jose, as well as a dorado, all on live bait.
Michael Williams and Brandon Haller from New Orleans had a nice day too, this time aboard "Ruthless" with four stripers released in the same area on June 18th.
"Ni Modo" had our highest one-day catch though, with six striped marlin, on June 19th at the 1150 spot for the Hedrick family from Pennsylvania.
Lennette Vigil and mom were thrilled to release three stripers aboard, Adriana, and 15 year old John Thompson from Sacramento did well to battle a 200 lb fish aboard Ruthless.
Fifty-eight percent of our Cabo San Lucas sportfishing charters were fortunate to catch marlin, whilst others did pretty well on other species, giving us an overall catch success rate for all species combined of a little over 86 percent.
Most boats caught one or two marlin, plus smaller game. Practically all the boats that drew a blank, did see marlin, but just couldn't get them to bite. Pisces anglers caught a total of 91 striped marlin of which 85 were released. Weights ranged from 140 to 200 lbs.
We had some backbreaking tuna this week. First up was a 220 pounder caught by a lady angler, aboard Ni Modo on June 18th. Anna Prickett from Apple Valley, Ca. did a great job of landing this huge fish.
This wasn't the only large tuna though, 14-year-old Brandon Haller from Covington, Louisiana, took 3 hours and 20 minutes to land his 242-pound tuna on 30-pound test, aboard "Ruthless".
Thirty percent of boats found tuna which was concentrated between Land's End and the Old Lighthouse up to 18 miles offshore. Most tuna were between 15 and 25 pounds, and when schools were found boats averaged two to ten fish.
We had some outstanding wahoo catches too. "La Brisa" caught four on June 23rd in the 30-40 lb class, as well as landing 10 tunas and 4 dorado for Nathalie Henrach and friends.
"Valerie" had three wahoo the following day and a couple of other boats had two a piece.
Dorado catches were rather slow at Cabo San Lucas, with just 13 percent of boats catching fish between 20 and 40 pounds.
Inshore there were fair amount of roosterfish, jack crevalle, some nice red snapper and some skipjacks. We also released on hammerhead shark.
We finally lost the wind that had blown for almost two months. Seas are much calmer and both air and water temperatures continue to increase.
Pisces boats fished at San Jose, then switched to Land's End, and the lighthouse area. The average water temperature was 72 degrees, and the best lures were live bait, cedar plugs in green/yellow.
