BROADBILL SWORDFISH IS LOST AFTER A
BATTLE LASTING 8.5 HOURS AT CABO SAN LUCAS
July 8, 2005, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Cabo San Lucas fishing report, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
The Cabo San Lucas charter fishing boat, Fish Cabo, with a group from Palmilla aboard, fought a swordfish for 8.5 hours, finally breaking the fish off just short of being boated, so I guess you might call that one an early release. The 3 other days Captain Gil reported in for reflected 2 stripers released, 1 dorado and 4 yellowfin tuna.
The Fish Cabo I, reporting for two Cabo San Lucas fishing days, had 4 yellowfin tuna. The skipper also reported seeing many billfish out to the south of Cabo Falso, but his anglers were focused on tuna and didn't want to tackle the billfish.
The Gaviota Sportfishing Fleet reported for 45 fishing days and reflected the fleet's first blue marlin of the season, taking aboard the "Gaviota VIII", with Captain Juan Dominguez. Overall catches reflected 1 blue marlin released, 20 stripers, (11 released), 6 dorado and 39 yellowfin tuna.
The ever changing water temperatures in the Cabo San Lucas vacation fishing area are difficult to figure. One day, it's good and the next, the "bottom falls out". However, the better fishing overall has been on the Pacific side, especially in the area of the Jaime Bank and on out to the south of Cabo Falso to 30-35 miles.
Cabo San Lucas weather was mostly sunny and warm, with temps from 72 degree nights to 96 daytime highs. Sea conditions were generally pretty good this week as far as the wind goes, but the sea temperature changes on a daily basis kept the skipper's on their toes.
The best sportfishing at Cabo San Lucas was from the Jaime Bank and out to the south of Cabo Falso. Live bait was critical for billfish success for most of the boats. The live bait supply was good, with mostly Caballitos.
