BIG FISH CAUGHT THIS WEEK INCLUDED A
500-POUND BLUE MARLIN AND 360-POUND TUNA
Aug. 12, 2005, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico Fishing Report:
Angler Lutz Zimmerman, England, landed the largest fish for the week at Cabo San Lucas, a 500-pound blue marlin, taken aboard the "Gaviota IX", with Captain Tomas Arellano at the helm. The trophy was taken on a red/blue customized lure being fast-trolled on 60-pound test mono, just outside the Palmilla Ridge.
We received another Cabo San Lucas fishing report that the Edith Fleet captured a 360-pound yellowfin tuna on Thursday, but we were unable to gather the details at the time of this report. I bet they would like to save that one for the Western Outdoor News Tuna Tournament in early November.
Overall catches for Gaviota Fleet at Cabo San Lucas reflected 3 blue marlin, 1 released, 33 stripers, 26 released, 3 sailfish released (just short of 1 billfish per boat day fished), 7 dorado and 45 yellowfin tuna for 45 fishing days.
The "fish Cabo" reported 4 Cabo San Lucas fishing days for 1 striper release, 3 dorado and 8 yellowfin tuna.
The Fish Cabo I reported for 3 fishing days at Cabo San Lucas that included 2 striper releases, 1 dorado and 1 yellowfin tuna.
Cabo San Lucas climate had 74 nights to 100 daytime highs, partly cloudy and humid. Sea Conditions had warm water, temperatures from 75 degrees at Cabo moving up to 80 at the Jaime and Golden Gate Banks on the Pacific, and 85 at the Gorda Banks. A distinct temperature break was running north to south near Cabo San Lucas, changing from 75 to 85.
The fish are scattered around Cabo San Lucas and there really doesn't seem to be a focused area. The bigger blue came from the Palmilla Ridge, but boats fished all over the area this past week. Live bait was best for the billfish. Bait was mostly Caballitos provided by the small boat vendors.
