IN A GOOD WEEK OF FISHING, BLUE MARLIN LANDED FROM 185 TO 375 POUNDS
Aug. 26-Sept. 1, 2005, Tracy Ehrenberg, Pisces Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fishing:
We had a pretty fabulous week of fishing here in Cabo San Lucas, with a nice mix of billfish, consisting mainly of striped marlin, plus some blue marlin and sailfish. We did not have any really big blues, but those that were caught ranged from 185 to 375 pounds.
There were many notable catches, such as two blue marlin released and one wahoo boated for Sharlene and Jeff Hockenbraugh from Redlands, Calif., aboard "La Brisa" on August 26th, off of Chileno.
The next fishing day out, "Andrea" released both a blue marlin and a sailfish, while landing a wahoo for Ray Strong and John Haight from Las Vegas, at the 95 spot.
The Cabo San Lucas charter fishing boat "Ensueno" hooked a fish close to 350 pounds this same day.
Hiroshi Nakamura, traveled all the way from Japan to try and catch a billfish. His expectations were surpassed, when he released a blue and two striped marlin, just six miles off of Redhill, aboard "Andrea" on the 29th.
Our Cabo San Lucas anglers of the week though, had to be Mark Sydow and David Bishop fishing aboard "Valerie" for a total of ten striped marlin released, over two days, as well as six dorado. They concentrated fishing mostly at Golden Gate on the Pacific side.
Other notable Cabo San Lucas catches for the fishing period were four striped marlin aboard "La Brisa" for the Masons from New Orleans and the Jenkins from Woodbridge, Calif., on August 30th and three stripers aboard "Adriana" along with two dorado for Eric and Cindy Meyer from Sugarland, Texas.
David Simmons and friends were our top Cabo San Lucas sailfish anglers with three released aboard "La Brisa" on September 1st.
Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was 83 percent, with 69 percent of charters catching billfish. Pisces anglers caught a total of 65 striped marlin, 10 blues and 13 sailfish, of which 60 fish were released.
When tuna were found, it was possible to catch up to eight fish, whereas the dorado catches were between one and five fish. The better tuna catches were on the Cortez side of Cabo San Lucas between the 95 spot and Redhill, weights from 15 to 50 lbs. Our top tuna boat was "Rebecca" for ten fish at the 1150 spot.
Dorado were from 15 to 40 lbs and were generally picked up whilst trolling for marlin, found on both the Cortez and Pacific side.
Wahoo catches were intermittent at Cabo San Lucas, with catches of fish up to 40 lbs. Inshore fishing didn't have a great deal happening, besides a few skipjacks and close in dorado.
Cabo San Lucas fishing weather had clear, sunny skies, with seas a little choppy on the Pacific, but otherwise calm. No storms.
Fishing locations included off at the Old Lighthouse and up to 15 miles straight out from Land's End, also some catches at the Jaime Bank, then Chileno, 95 spot and Redhill. Some catches were close off of Santa Maria, then switching to Golden Gate.
Average Cabo San Lucas fishing area water temperature was 84-86 degrees. In fishing, the best action was on live bait, green/yellow, cedar plugs, guacamaya.
