MARLIN AND SAILFISH ACTION CONSISTENT ALL AROUND CABO
Aug. 27-Sept. 2, 2005, George Landrum, Fly Hooker Sportfishing, Cabo San Lucas fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
The Cabo San Lucas fishing area had high temperatures in the mid to high 90s, and the water on the Sea of Cortez has been in the 84-88 degree range this week. That warmer water has been working its way around the cape toward the Pacific. On the Pacific the water has mostly been in the low 80s with most of it right at 81-82 degrees. The water on both sides of Cabo San Lucas has been very comfortable for fishing with swells at 2-3 feet and very little wind.
Bait is mostly Caballito from the boat boats at the normal $2 per bait but there has also been Sardinas available up around the Palmilla area at $20 a scoop. There have also been Mackerel available for the catch it yourself crowd up around the Golden Gate Bank.
Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, and Striped Marlin as well as Sailfish have been biting fairly well at Cabo San Lucas depending on where you have been fishing. One area was the Golden Gate Bank early in the week, especially if you hit it during the tide change. There were tons of Mackerel schooling on the bank and they were being very actively fed on by the Striped Marlin. Catching your own bait and then sending them into the depths resulted in many boats catching ands releasing up to six fish.
The 95 spot was consistent in providing action from Sailfish, Striped Marlin and Blue Marlin. Most of the Black Marlin action came for boats working closer to shore, mostly within the 100 fathom curve, and there were fish up to 600 pounds jumping on lures. Sailfish were at the 95 spot and also found at the Gorda Banks as well as up around Punta Gorda. There were also some very nice Blues found along the Pacific canyons! All in all, it was a good week for Billfish at Cabo San Lucas.
Yellowfin tuna were a mix this week with school fish reported around the Gorda Banks, most of the fishing action coming to boats drifting Sardinas. I did see a few nice fish in the 100-plus pound range brought in on Friday.
I saw a lot of Dorado flags at Cabo San Lucas this week and while there were a few nice fish to 50 pounds caught, most of the fish seemed to be in the 15-20 pound class. Mostly within 2 miles was where most of the action took place, with the exception of several boats that were able to find a piece of floating wood that held a decent school.
A few Cabo San Lucas sportfishing boats did get lucky with wahoo in the 30-50 pound class.
Inshore fishing at Cabo San Lucas was a bit slow this week but I did have a couple of guys who had a blast catching some Roosterfish to 40 pounds then got lucky on a nice Wahoo. Most of the normal inshore action was slow so the majority of Cabo San Lucas charter fishing Pangas were heading off shore.
