GOOD NUMBERS OF BLUE MARLIN SHOWING UP IN
SOLMAR FLEET FISH COUNTS AT CABO SAN LUCAS
Sept. 8-14, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas fishing, Baja Sur, Mexico Report:
After a day's fishing at Cabo San Lucas aboard the Solmar, Manistee, MI, angler Andrew Anderson commented: "(I) Had a great day fishing." All he did was catch two blue marlin weighing 210 and 235 pounds, plus a 315-pound black marlin. All of his fish were taken on live mackerel while fishing in an area 5 to 20 miles west of Cabo San Lucas.
George Reese of Tampa Hills, FL also had a great day of Cabo San Lucas fishing, catching four striped marlin, one sailfish and four yellowfin tuna. He fished the Solmar IV off Punta Gorda.
Gordon Brown of Tehachapi, CA caught and released a striped marlin estimated to weigh 150 pounds, along with a 100-pound sailfish that he also released. Both fish were taken on a red and yellow lure while fishing off Punta Palmilla aboard the Solmar I.
Others catching big blue marlin at Cabo San Lucas included Matt Steigman, together with Doug Richmond, of Fairfax, VA, and George Chew of San Gabriel, CA. Steigman and Richmond bagged a 400-pound blue and a 40-pound dorado, both on live mackerel while fishing off Faro Viejo from the Solmar VI. Chew caught a 323-pound blue while fishing the El Torito off Punta Gorda. It was his first trip to Cabo.
Tim Burnos of Contra, CA took a pair of striped marlin, one on bait and the other by lure, fishing the Faro Viejo aboard the Cabo San Lucas charter fishing boat San Lucas IV.
In praising the crew of the Solmar VII, D. Helfin of Warrenton, VA, said he had a day of "terrific fishing," taking five yellowfin tuna, a sunfish which he released, and a 187-pound striper. All of his fish were caught on live mackerel off Punta Palmilla.
Our top Cabo San Lucas sportfishing skipper of the week was Antonio Romero of the El Torito, who in six outings produced 12 striped marlin, five blue marlin, 11 yellowfin tuna, 15 dorado and six sailfish.
Total catch by the Solmar fleet for this Cabo San Lucas fishing week included 38 striped marlin of which 25 released, 26 blue marlin, 29 yellowfin tuna, 27 dorado and 15 sailfish.
