TWENTY-THREE STRIPED MARLIN LANDED
THIS WEEK BY CABO'S SOLMAR SPORTFISHING FLEET
Sept. 6-12, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fishing:
The Cabo San Lucas sportfishing vacation area has seas flat, wind a whisper, and sea temperatures in the 66-72-degree range providing modest catches of billfish, tuna and dorado during the week.
Leading the billfish catch was that of Portland, Ore., angler Patrick Longwell who released one of two Cabo San Lucas striped marlin and four yellowfin tuna caught off Chileno Bay. He fished the Solmar and scored all of his catch on live mackerel.
Mackerel produced a single Cabo San Lucas blue marlin and one dorado for Lauren Mays of Florida, who fished the Golden Gate Bank on the San Lucas IV. He released the blue but kept the dorado
Julio Garcia of Mexicali, B.C., Mexico, used a green, purple and red lure to take five dorado and a 187-pound striped marlin, while fishing the Solmar I off Punta Gorda.
Christian McKenzie of Houston, Tex., released both of his striped marlin caught off Cerro Colorado from the Solmar IV. Mackerel was his most productive bait, as well.
New Yorker Christy O'Neal was more than pleased with her 51-pound wahoo and five yellowfin tuna she caught off Cerro Colorado from the El Torito.
Jeff Taylor of Los Angeles, Calif., used both lure and mackerel to boat two dorado and three yellowfin tuna fishing the Cabo San Lucas charter fishing boat Solmar VII at the Faro Viejo.
Junior McPherson of Cleveland, OH, nabbed three dorado weighing between 25 and 40 pounds off the Jaime Bank. He took his catch from the San Lucas VI on a green and black lure.
A catch that included nine striped marlin, five released, 19 yellowfin tuna and 10 dorado in five outings won captain of the week honors for Javier Abaroa of the Solmar.
Total catch by the Solmar fishing fleet included 23 striped marlin, 10 blue marlin (four released), 35 dorado, 41 yellowfin tuna and one wahoo.
