CABO SAN LUCAS MARLIN ACTION STEADY ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ARCH
June 2, 2006, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Gaviota Fleet, Cabo San Lucas fishing, Mexico:
Cabo San Lucas had one of the slower weeks for anglers, but Cabo San Lucas striped marlin action remained very good and consistent on both sides of the peninsula.
While billfish are scattered about and almost anywhere in any direction from Cabo San Lucas, there were some concentrations at Golden Gate and Red Hill areas, 25 miles on either side of Cabo. There was pretty good fishing action on artificials, but live bait was best on the feeders and drop-backs.
Early in the week, on a not too windy day, the charter boat "Fish Cabo I" hit the Golden Gate Bank for a 3 marlin release day and later in the week, the "Fish Cabo" had a 4 marlin release day while fishing off Red Hill, above the Gorda Banks.
The "Fish Cabo," reporting for 2 Cabo San Lucas fishing days, reflected 7 stripers released, and was high boat for the week, while the "Fish Cabo I" reporting for 4 days reflected 6 stripers and 1 sailfish released.
The Gaviota Sportfishing Fleet, reporting for 23 Cabo San Lucas fishing days, reflected 23 stripers, (18 released) and 2 dorado.
"Gaviota VII" was high boat for the fleet, with 7 releases for 5 fishing days. Only 2 dorado and no yellowfin tuna were reported for the entire week and with favorable fishing conditions. Why? Wish I knew.
Cabo San Lucas Pacific westerly winds have cooled the Golden Gate Bank a bit but seas have been so uncomfortable that the boats haven't tried to get back up there.
Cabo weather was hot and sunny, temps ranged from 70 degree nights to 100 daytime highs. Sea conditions were rough on the Pacific side but favorable on the Sea of Cortez side. Cabo San Lucas sportfishing area water temps ranged from 70-71 degrees at the Golden Gate Bank to 74 degrees at San Cristobal, both on the Pacific side, moving up to 78 degrees at Cabo and climbing to 84 degrees at the Gordo Banks.
