FISH CABO AND GAVIOTA FLEET FISHING REPORT
Sept. 15, 2006, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
This week's Cabo fishing report was apparently in error, as all we received was a single fishing day's report and the other 6 pages evaporated into the atmosphere of the computer and I didn't realize it until reading the various fish counts for the other local sportfishers.
This week's Gaviota Feet fishing report for 33 Cabo San Lucas fishing days reflected 3 blue marlin, all under 300 pounds, 8 striped marlin, 48 yellowfin tuna, and 96 dorado.
The charter boats "Fish Cabo" and "Fish Cabo I" reported in for a total of 4 fishing days with 1 sailfish released, 1 small blue marlin, 4 dorado and 4 yellowfin tuna.
As this fishing week draws to a close, we are facing another storm, Tropical Storm Lane, which is expected to reach category 1 hurricane strength by Saturday morning and of course, dump more rain on the area, too.
Cabo San Lucas weather had some mixed clouds, but was mostly sunny during the early week, clouding up on Friday with projected wind and rain for Saturday, with air temperatures from 77 degree nights to 97 degree daytime highs.
Cabo sea conditions were good through the early week, as water temperatures ranged from 84 degrees at the Golden Gate Bank to 88 degrees on the Gorda Banks.
It seems like most of the billfish are offshore, in an arc from the Jaime Bank around to the 95 fathom spot and the 1150 fathom spot. But there is no real concentration. Most of the tuna taken have been with the porpoise.
Fishing wi live bait was best for the stripers, artificials were best for the blue marlin, and feathers and cedar plugs for the tuna. The live bait supply is returning to normal.
