DOUBLE-DIGIT STRIPED MARLIN FISHING ON THE PACIFIC SIDE
Nov. 26, 2006, Mike Connolly, charter boat Falcon, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Golden Gate Bank striped marlin fishing was good and it just got better.
In particular for Jobe Villavicencio on the charter boat "Ni Modo II." Jobe's anglers caught and released 23 marlin and a sailfish in 2 days of drifting with mackerel at midweek.
There were lots of multiple fish hookups throughout the Cabo San Lucas sportfishing fleet.
The Finger Bank was solid dorado, as it has been. After there were enough dorado in the fish box, some boats fished hookless jigs and dropped back bait if marlin appeared, doing this to avoid trying to release dorado all day. Not an easy task.
Jeff Ham captain of the boat "Carpe Diem" has been fishing the Finger Bank regularly and reports the ratio of stripers to dorado is now closer to 50-50 compared to a week ago when it was 80-20 dorado to marlin. His fish counts reflect that, as the "Carpe Diem" has been getting 10 to 20 marlin bites a day and all the dorado they need.
The boat "Trauma" with Capt. Luis Abaroja released 12 striped marlin at the Finger Bank on Saturday. There are frigate birds working the marlin schools, mostly after lunch. Before they show, jigs and trolled bait are doing the job with plenty of doubles, triples, quads.
Smallish yellowfin tuna are around for those in need of sushi and they are eating cedar plugs and bait when the porpoise schools are located, from 7 to 20 miles offshore on the Pacific side.
There are still a few blue marlin around Cabo, with at least a bite or two amongst the fleet each day. There was an early bait bite for marlin at Cabo Falso at midweek.
Cabo San Lucas fishing water temperatures are running in the low 80s.
Cabo has world class fishing right now. It's a very good time to be in Cabo on a boat. There are lots of fish to catch. Bring friends to help.
