SALMON CATCHES REPORTED OUT OF CASTRO'S CAMP
Nov. 29, 2005, Chris Kugel, Castro's Camp, Erendira, Mexico Sportfishing Trip Report:
I just got back today from fishing at Castro's Camp at Erendira. No one fished on Thanksgiving Day. All the boats were out fishing on Friday. It was very good fishing for rockfish, barracuda, and we saw one white seabass caught, and a halibut!
On Saturday, the wind blew like crazy, clear and cold. However, Oscar Barrios who is the skipper of the Don Castro, caught the first king salmon of the season.
On Sunday only one boat fished. It was windy but not as bad as Saturday. They caught nice reds, lings, and chocolates. There was lots of bait, lots of birds, looks like it is getting ready to go.
There is no real season for salmon of Erendira, that I know of, but during the winter and up to and through April, salmon are caught at Castro's Camp.
I would have to guess on the number, but from what I have seen and what the skippers tell me, about two-dozen fish are caught a during a "winter."
I caught one salmon last year, throwing a Krocodile at breaking white sea bass. It was about the same size as the one caught last week, 10 to 12 pound. I caught that salmon in February of 2004. All the salmon I have seen caught at Castro's looked the same. I am not a salmon expert, but was told that these fish are Kings.
