Erendira fishing articles, maps, fishing reports, peak seasons, hot spots, and vacation
travel information for the top Baja California sportfishing location of Erendira, Mexico.
Erendira fishing usually means "bottom fishing" and at this supremely reliable old time Baja fishing hole, that almost always means you're hauling in a big "full Mexican limit" of quality assorted fish including: lingcod, various rockcods, whitefish, calico bass, yellowtail, white seabass, halibut, lesser miscellaneous rockfish, giant Humboldt squid, and sheephead.
During brief flurries of surface action, mostly during the summer months, Erendira anglers also have a passing shot at surface yellowtail, barracuda, and bonita, and that's great too, but really, fishing at Erendira and other points along this part of Baja California's northern Pacific coast is really about going deep with fist-sized sinkers and big chunks of bait.
Erendira sportfishing waters are centered only about 40 sea miles south of the large city of Ensenada, but the feel of the place is still semi-remote, the water almost always pristinely clear, and the fishing is usually at least "good" and probably "excellent." About the only possible problems here are rough seas brought by occasional winter Pacific storms and infrequent "red tide," or plankton bloom conditions that sometimes knock out the water's oxygen supply, and therefore its fishing action, for brief periods during late spring and summer.
Other than that, fishing in the very cool, nutrient rich, bait filled water at Erendira is basically a brain-dead process of riding a small boat out to your chosen spot, usually about 4 to 7 miles from the small port of San Isidro, dropping your chosen bait or lure about 60 to 200 feet deep, waiting a few moments, and hauling in your fish. Repeat as desired. If you have to wait more than about two minutes for your first bite, you are having a slow day. No kidding.
Like most fishing spots along Baja's entire Pacific coast, Erendira is not a good choice for the private small boater wishing to trailer in and launch. There is no good ramp at Erendira, no launch protection, and the open Pacific water is often swelly with afternoon whitecaps.
Any sized boat that you'd want to fish in here would be a real hassle as you attempted to maneuver it down a narrow cliff route and launch into what can sometimes amount to almost open surf. Putting your precious boat back onto your fragile trailer over unfamiliar terrain in rough afternoon conditions could quickly deteriorate into "Baja nightmare story" status.
But luckily, Erendira has an old-line Baja charter fishing operation called Castro's Camp that can take you out in adequately sized charter fishing boats with experienced captains who will put you right on the fish and perform all tasks that look even remotely like "work."
The Castro's Camp fishing operation at Erendira is so old and established that it was already a "mainline Baja" standard back in the 1980s when Gene Kira and Neil Kelly came here to do "research" for their fishing guidebook The Baja Catch.
Located on a little bluff overlooking a very small, south-facing cove, Castro's Camp was a bit on the "Baja rustic" side back in those days, but you could already see where the family was headed, and today it provides neat-as-a-pin kitchen cabins, nice clean bunks, meals, bait, Mexican fishing licenses, fillet services, and of course, those boats and captains. Castro's Camp makes fishing at Erendira an easy deal for anyone. If your catch doesn't include a special fish you've been wanting to take home, Castro's is also a good place to hang around as the other boats come in, when you can often make a "deal" on exactly what you want for your ice chest.
Another nice thing about a fishing trip to Erendira is that the drive is one of Baja's easiest. From the U.S. border at Tijuana, you drive down Mex 1 to the well-signed turnoff about 50 miles south of Ensenada, turn west toward the Pacific Ocean, and keep going until you get there about 15 miles later. You can't get lost. It's a dead-end road. If you start seeing rockcod swimming across your windshield, you've gone too far.
