SURF PERCH AND BOTTOM FISHING OUT OF CASTRO'S CAMP
Nov. 3, 2006, Sonny Ly, Castro's Camp, Erendira, Baja California, Mexico:
We fished 2 days out of Castro's Camp with Captain Jorge as always, along with longtime friends Dario Rodriguez, Sergio Esparza, and Rudy "Chugz" Lopez.
Both days were extremely productive in the morning with calm seas, but wind was killer at around 11 a.m. or noon.
We started off fishing with the trollers, and hooked up to pretty wide open Bonito, 10-15 pounds, action for a couple of hours. Those Bonito are sure a lot of fun, but we needed to fill the cooler with bottom critters before the wind picked up.
We cut up some freshly caught Bonito along with some squid for great wide-open action on White Fish, Red Rock Cod, Sheep Head, and a couple Johnny Bass. White Fish were very large with some pushing 13 pounds. The white fish were so thick that every drop yielded an instant hookup.
Erendira was beautiful as always, which made surf fishing irresistible.
We easily explored secluded beach areas with Dario's Nissan Titan. Some spots were hard to fish at with the incoming tide, but we decided to fish where some locals were fishing.
The spot yielded nonstop surf perch action.
We got there while wind was very strong, but still managed a lot of hand-sized perch. It seemed like we had just missed the open bite of large slab surf perch easily pushing 2 pounds.
We ended our day with a fish fry chicken barbecue. All in all, the Erendira fishing trip was paradise as always.
