FISHING AT SAN BRUNO AND PUNTA MANGLES WITH CAPT. PAULINO MARTINEZ

Nov. 6, 2004, Don Bear, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Trip Reports:

On Monday, Ray Harper of Lemon Grove and I fished the San Bruno and El Mangle areas with Paulino Martinez, catching 0 (yes, zero) dorado, 4 roosterfish, 1 cabrilla and 5 barrilete.

We used both sardines and mackerel as bait, but the majority of strikes came on sardines. A north wind came up around 8:30, making the water quite rough. When we got back to the Loreto sportfishing marina around 2, the port captain had raised a red flag, indicating the marina was closed to further departures. The wind lasted for the next 3 days, essentially closing down all fishing.

On the same day, Fabrizio Marangoni of Thousand Oaks and his friend Jerry visiting from the Channel Islands marina fished with Manuel Torres, catching 6 dorado in an area north of Pta. Tintorerra, using mackerel as bait. Clearly they went to the right area!

By Friday the wind had mostly died and Fabrizio Marangoni of Thousand Oaks and I went out with Paulino to the area about 12 miles north of Pta. Tintorrera. We caught 5 dorados, all under 10 lbs., mostly on sardines. Although the water wasn't flat, it was certainly fishable weather. Water temperatures were around 78 degrees both days. Today (Saturday) it is dead calm.
