WINDS FRUSTRATE LOCAL SPORTFISHING BOATS

March 9, 2005, Pam Bolles, Baja Big Fish Company, Loreto, Mexico, Fishing Report:

Winds have made Loreto fishing frustrating at best. I can only describe the Yellowtail fishing as spotty with one or two fish per boat being the norm.

On Sunday Captain Eulogio Davis Sanchez took Gary Yamasaki and Charles Struve to San Bruno where they boated 6 Yellowtail and broke off two. The fish were all in the mid 20 pound range. They told me of seeing another boat catch and kill a large sailfish. A marlin was hooked too but broke off.

At Pulpito the Yellowtail are being reported in the 20 pound range. North off San Nicholas smaller 15 pound Yellowtail are breezing the waters. Isla Catalan has been disappointing due to lack of bait off Puerto Escondido and no Yellowtail visible at the surface.

On March 4, 2005, an estimated 60 Kg. Baqueta was reported caught off Punta Perico by an American fisherman.

I was on the water on March 1 and noticed a lot of sargasso floating right over temperature breaks. It was on the southeast and southwest and north sides of Isla Coronado. The captains are reporting flotsam over the San Bruno area and other locations as well. It is also very prevalent to our south, out of Puerto Escondido and south to Punta San Cosme and east from there to Isla Danzante. If the stuff is growing on the rocks below much of it will likely get broken off with the winds of late. I haven't noticed any while fishing over my favorite reefs, but it may be growing deeper then the 40 feet I bottom out at with a fly. It grows on the surface of rocks by anchoring itself and extending vertically toward the surface. We should be getting annoyed soon by the stuff mucking up the files and our not being able to fish areas where its growing. This is all good if we are to have thick sargasso to attract and keep dorado this season. I think Loreto is due as its been a few years since we've had a stellar dorado bite last, in the years 2000 and 2001.

Water Surface Temperature Range: 65-74 degrees.
