FISHING 4 DAYS WITH CAPT. JOSE ALFONZO MURILLO

July 14, 2005, Dave McKenzie, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Trip Report:

Before we left home for this Loreto fishing trip, we decided, based on reports, to forget about Dorado and try a Loreto light Bass tackle trip. We fished four days with Jose Alfonzo Murillo aboard the Panga "Santa Maria".

We stayed inshore and two us of were able to score somewhere around 25 different species over the course of 4 days. The majority of our fishing time was spent targeting shallow water Cabrilla and Pargo off of Isla Carmen. We found excellent shallow water fishing with both artificials and fly lined Sardinas all around Carmen. Shallow reefs close to deep water held willing fish all day long.

We spent some early morning time around San Bruno looking for Roosters and Coronado for yellowtail but the squid was so thick we couldn't get baits past 'em, but when we did. decent Pinto Bass was the result.

The highlight of the trip was walking and fishing along the Loreto Malecon during the evening. We would fish the rocks from the Oasis Hotel and finish up under the lights at the Marina for several light tackle species including Jacks, Triggers, Corvina, Barred Pargo, Barracuda, needlefish, lizardfish, ladyfish, etc.

The trip with light spinning and casting tackle is great for bass anglers looking for something different and use the tackle they already have without having to buy much.

I caught a finespotted jawfish off the south side of Isla Coronado on July 4th 2005. The fish was in 30 ft of water and I was using a 20 lb test casting rod free lining a Sardina. Water temperature was about 80. Fish was 14 inches and about 1-1.5lbs.
