This weekend I had the advantage of fishing at San Quintin with Barry Brightenburg from Fish Trap Lures on board my boat, Santa Monica, and I got a private fishing seminar on my own waters. Thanks Barry, for sharing swim bait secrets with me.
With calico bass and white seabass in mind, we tried to fish on Saturday, but the weather turned bad, making it impossible to reach the northern fishing spots.
On Sunday, with better conditions, we fished south of San Quintin for a hot but short calico bass bite on swim baits by 11 a.m., and beautiful White Seabass action by noon.
During the afternoon, we fished north at the deep spots for bottom fish. We tried for yellowtails on the 15 spot, but the reef guards were around waiting for an easy meal, making it impossible to bring the forkies on board. The water temperature at San Quintin was 59.5 to 60 degrees, with dirty green water and flat seas.
We caught during this fishing trip 15 species in one day including White Seabass, Calico Bass, Bonitas, Barracudas, Sandbass, 3 rockcod species, Lingcod, Sculpins, Whitefish, Sheephead, Johnny bass and Salmon Grouper, using butterfly jigs and swim baits from 5 to 9 inches. An excellent San Quintin fishing experience.
