I had John Magenheim and his buddy Tony out for some San Quintin bottom fishing action. The guys wanted to fish for lingcod and red rockcod, but I wanted to see if I could put them on some bigger fish than the usual inshore models, so we made the run out to an old San Quintin commercial fishing hole that doesn't get hit by the fleet. We got to the spot and on the first drop it was ON! Most of the lingcod were in the 12-15 pound range and the reds were all big. John Magenheim landed a beautiful cowcod and we even got into some giant Humboldt squid. The water temperature was 59-60 degrees and clean. There was a northwest swell of about 1-3 feet and wind was 5-10 knots and variable in the morning, to 0-5 knots in afternoon.
Feb. 5, 2005, Kelly Catian, K&M Offshore Sportfishing, San Quintin, Mexico Fishing Report:
The fishing week at San Quintin started out good with yellows still on the 15 fathom and also some white seabass down south. And of course lots of rockfish.
On Friday and Saturday I had Denis Quesnel of Action Lures and his buddies Bob Johnson and Lee Lescher with me, and their friends Rick Bethel and John Shepard with Oscar.
Friday morning started out great with a quick bait stop, mostly mackerel and some sardines. The guys wanted to get a few yellowtail and then go fishing for lingcod and red rockcod, so we hit the 15 first. We found the yellows down near the bottom on the south side of the reef, the same place they've been for almost a month.
Denis brought lots of his jigs to try and they were working great on everything from yellowtail to rockcod. We fished a small kelp bed near the point to try for some calico bass, and again the Action Lures were working great. Action lures are a jointed iron basically. The jigs can be retrieved at a much slower rate than regular iron and will produce a swimming effect without spinning, www.actionlures.com, 949-275-8797.
San Quintin fishing weather was cool in morning and warm and sunny by midday, in the mid to high 70s. Water conditions were good with water a little cooler than last week at 59-60 degrees, but still clean and blue offshore. Seas were calm with a 1-2 foot swell out of the west and there was no wind at San Quintin on Saturday, but Sunday afternoon got snotty around 1 p.m.
