Daniel Peters, Poun Keo, Brian Pham and I fished at San Quintin with Kelly Catian of K&M Offshore Sportfishing on Sunday 2/20. The fishing weather was beautiful at San Quintin with no wind and very little swell. Our timing was just right as two storms preceded and succeeded us. The Old Mill road is terrible. I would not recommend it without a 4WD. It is especially bad within 1/4 mile of Hwy. 1.
After making bait easily, we headed south from San Quintin to El Socorro to fish for yellowtail. Upon arrival, we saw hundreds of birds circling boiling fish that we assumed were Yellowtail. We tried fly lining some live mackerels and throwing iron but could not hook a Yellowtail. We did manage to catch several dozen nice sized Sandbass on the Salas 6X jigs, however.
Then, I hooked something larger than a Sandbass on a Green and Yellow Green Bay Packer color jig. After about a 10 minute battle, I landed a 53 pound white seabass. Kelly swears that he hasn't even tied on a green and yellow jig for years as they are unproductive. Maybe he's changed his mind? We fished a little while longer, trying to raise some more Croakers or Yellowtail. We managed a few bonito and more Sand Bass but nothing more. Kelley's son Oscar was fishing nearby and managed to land to nice Yellowtail about 15 pounds apiece, however.
We then headed to deeper water. Poun landed a nice 23 pound White Sea Bass in 170 feet of water at a nontraditional spot. He caught it on the bottom with a dropper loop rig and a live mackerel. I caught a 24 pound Halibut in the same location on a similar rig. We landed some small Lingcod, some Red Rockcods, and some more Sand Bass before heading into San Quintin about 12:30.
