This week the fishing at San Quintin has been sort of windy, but Maurice Sadi and his group from Key Toyota decided to come down despite my advice to wait a few more days.
On Thursday, San Quintin was looking good, with no wind in the morning, although there was a good west swell coming in. Fishing for bait was quick, with good size, and we were on our way south of San Quintin to go fishing for white seabass and yellowtail.
Both of our San Quintin fishing boats, the Offshore II and Offshore III, saw lots of bird action and tons of surface bait. While fishing on our third or fourth stop Maurice got stopped on the iron, blue-white, at the same time buddy John got picked up also on the drop.
Maurice boated the first yellowtail at 18 pounds, and his friend John got spit after a good battle on my 8-foot jig stick.
Capt. Oscar on the Offshore III had no luck on the yellowtail, but got some bass, barracuda and bonita.
The guys wanted to try fishing for some lingcod and red rockcod so we headed down and out to one of the spots farther south of San Quintin. Maurice and group scored some great, every-drop bottom fishing and the fish were all really good size. Live mackerel were working best, using 10-ounce torpedoes sinkers and 2/0 Owner treble hooks on a drop-loop rig of 40 to 50 pound test.
The wind came up at 12-1 p.m., and the swell was 6-8 feet with larger sets at west facing points. The fishing water temperature off San Quintin was 58-59 degrees, and the day was warm and sunny in the morning and windy and cool in afternoon.
