San Quintin, Mexico:
Spotty Winter Action For Local Sportfishing Boats

Dec. 28, 2004, Julio Meza, San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico:

The fishing has not been easy at San Quintin. You have to have a good sonar and very fast reels with jigs. The fish move very fast from one side to the other of the San Quintin fishing spots in minutes and if you want to stay on just one area to save gas you are done.

We find them on the meter here, drop the jigs, catch one or two, and that is it on that stop. We move again 50 yards or more. Then the same. We are hunting the fish, not just catching.

I was going to fish out of San Quintin with Barry but the weather turned ugly. I went out with Paul Lee and Danny for 2 yellowtail, bonitos and a few bottom fish, in 8 foot swells and 35 m.p.h. south winds. We were wet from the top to the bottom while fishing the 15 spot. The drift was so strong that the boat never stayed more than 10 seconds at the same place, The San Diego boat Shogun was fishing the same spot, chumming bonitas and not less than 30 happy seals.

Local San Quintin fishing boat guides were catching good numbers of whitefish, reds and lingcod.
