Mulege Fishing Vacation & Travel Information

Mulege fishing articles, maps, fishing reports, peak seasons, hot spots, and vacation travel information for the top sportfishing locations of Mulege, Mexico.

The Mulege fishing area is the most northerly section of Baja's Sea of Cortez coast where warm water tuna, dorado, and billfish, including striped marlin and especially sailfish, may be regularly targeted during the summer months. These species may appear sporadically in great numbers for another 50 miles or so northward, but really, the fishery changes dramatically at Mulege and begins to transition to the cooler waters and very strong tidal currents of the Sea of Cortez Midriff area.

In the Mulege sportfishing area, there is also another, perhaps less noticeable but just as significant change in the fishery, for northwards of Punta Chivato, about 20 miles north of town, the humble spotted bay bass begins to dominate as the major resident reef fish as it mingles together with the larger "cabrilla," or leopard grouper. South of Punta Chivato, the Sea of Cortez begins to warm up quickly, and the cooler water spotted bay bass disappears within a few miles of coastline, not to be seen again until the open waters of the Pacific Ocean are reached 300 miles south at about Cabo San Lucas. At Mulege and southwards, the more highly prized "cabrilla," and not the lowly spotted bay bass, rules the reefs.

Mulege's fishing area, at about 26 degrees north latitude, is arguably the most comfortable and accommodating of any location along the Sea of Cortez coast of Mexico's Baja California peninsula.

At Mulege, there is some north wind to bother anglers during the winter months, but nothing like the Midriff area and northern Sea of Cortez; there are some summer tropical storms and even the occasional hurricane, but again, nothing like Loreto, La Paz, East Cape, and the Los Cabos corridor at the peninsula's southern tip.

Even the tides cooperate at Mulege, as northward and southward tidal movements up and down the Sea of Cortez often partially cancel each other to produce minimal currents and a typical tidal range of only about 3 to 5 feet, as opposed to about 6 feet on the open Pacific and up to about 20 feet at the extreme north end of the Sea of Cortez.

The fishing close to the town of Mulege is centered on medium weight species, in abundance and with long "peak seasons" compared to other locations on the Sea of Cortez. Fishing is usually good to very good here for many species including leopard grouper, barracuda, yellowtail, and gulf grouper during the cooler months, and various snappers, black skipjack, dorado, ladyfish, giant needlefish, yellowfin tuna, and billfish during the summer months.

For larger sport fishing boats working out of Mulege, the outer waters offer excellent seasonal fishing for tuna, dorado, billfish, and yellowtail outside of Punta Concepcion and southwards toward Punta Pulpito, and really excellent year-round yellowtail fishing in the cooler waters of Isla San Marcos off Santa Rosalia to the north.

The town of Mulege itself is one of Baja's most charming and interesting, perhaps because it is so very small, with only about 3,500 residents, including many vacationing expatriates who spend the winter here. The Spanish mission of Santa Rosalia de Mulege was founded on a hill here in 1705, and the Santa Rosalia "river" that runs through the middle of town is the opening of a shallow tidal estuary that supports a large area of farms and oasis-like palm groves.

This narrow, mangrove-lined slew of brackish water was once home to an amazing population of potentially world-record sized black snook that were first described in the late 1950s by such pioneering writers as Ray Cannon, the first Baja Editor of Western Outdoor News, and Frank Dufresne of Field & Stream.

At Mulege, these powerful fish were rarely subdued with hook and line because of the very tight quarters permitted by the mangrove roots, and they were usually harpooned by locals working at night by lantern light and using harpoons with spear points spread six inches apart.

Whether because of pollution, overfishing, spraying for mosquitos, or silting of the riverbed, these enormous Mulege snook are now gone, and only a few small ones may still be caught once in while around the mouth of the river.

Nevertheless, anglers fishing out of Mulege today enjoy reliable, very good to excellent fishing most of the time for both resident reef species and seasonal migrators, in weather that is quite often comfortable and safe for private fishing boats properly handled.
