Just got back from San Quintin fishing with a group of five. They fished on the 28th and 29th of January. I went with them on this trip.
Tom Bingham of Downey fished out of Tiburon's Pangas in San Quintin on a "Go Baja" charter with four other anglers. Tom Bingham, Henry Kim of Pomona and Tom Rauland of Bullhead City, Ariz., went out in a cruiser with Capt. Chava, while Bruno Sutherland of Santa Ana, Ruben Garcia of Santa Ana and myself went out in the super panga "Cucajuan" with Tiburon himself at the helm.
We headed out with the plan of heading north to the high spots such as the "240" and "15 fathom spot" to look for the local yellowtail that have been biting and some big lingcod, but before we got out to the point, the other boats started coming back and radioing for us to turn around, as there were windy conditions and high seas, so we headed south instead to a spot just north of Socorro.
The water temperature was a chilly 58 degrees with swells so big that neighboring boats would disappear. The fishing was slow, but we were able to pick up 23 sandbass and a couple of red rockcods in the panga, and 26 sandbass, two lings, two large bonitas, and a couple of reds in the cruiser. The largest bonito a 15 pounder, was caught by Tom Rauland who was on his first ocean fishing trip.
Since the wind started to pick up, we decided to call it a day and head back in to San Quintin. This was supposed to be a one day fishing trip, but after returning and cleaning our fish, Tiburon offered to make up for a slow day, which was totally out of his control, by offering to take my customers out a second day for a greatly reduced price, which Tom Bingham and Henry Kim jumped on, so on Sunday they went out with Capt. Chava in the super panga "Cucajuan" and cleaned up on huge lingcod, reds, sandbass and whitefish, enough to fill the onboard 120-quart ice chest and to finish filling up one of our 120-quart chests with fillets. The excellent service from Tiburon's ensured that all had a productive fishing trip. We stayed at the Old Mill Hotel.
